Environment

A successful farm is underpinned by a thriving environment.

Championing agricultureโ€™s ability to contribute to positive climate action is a particular passion of Mike, one of the four Partners here at Nolands. Mike is the driving force behind our move towards more environmentally conscious farming methods & is keen to support the National Farmersโ€™ Unionโ€™s target of a net zero agricultural industry in the UK by 2040. Some of the actions that we are taking to improve Nolandsโ€™ environmental impact are outlined below.

Winter Bird Food

We grow large plots of plants specifically designed to provide vital food resources for farmland birds throughout autumn & winter, when food can otherwise be scarce. Moreover, the flowering plants also benefit insects & pollinators, such as bees, butterflies & hoverflies.

Wildflower Margins

We have over 20 kilometers of wildflower margins interwoven across the farm. These provide an abundant supply of pollen & nectar & provide a thriving habitat for a plethora of wildlife, including small mammals & invertebrates.

Herbal Leys

We are incorporating increasing areas of diverse herbal leys into our farming system. These provide a healthy source of food for our livestock, provide habitat & food for invertebrates & pollinators, & improve soil structure and water infiltration.

Solar Panels

We have an array of solar panels that produce electricity to supply our needs on the farm. When our panels are producing more electricity than we are using, the surplus is supplied back to the National Grid.
